The approved award amount is $101,460, which will be used to seek accreditation from the International Association of Coroners and Medical Examiners (IACME).
“Put simply, death has unavoidable impacts on the living, so it is critical that the community has full confidence that the Office of the Coroner follows established professional standards in an equitable, consistent way” said Anderson County Coroner Greg Shore. “By obtaining and maintaining accreditation from the IACME, we can offer a methodology which assures all interested parties that investigations are conducted without regard to a decedent’s station in life or personal circumstance.”
Recent increases in the work rate of the Coroner’s Office have far outpaced the community’s rate of population growth, and the office has seen a striking increase in the number of accidental death determinations. These conditions further emphasize the need for the most accurate and defensible standards that the office can obtain.
“We oftentimes see cases where a death occurs due to circumstances that indicate potential negligence or responsibility by others” said Deputy Coroner Don McCown. “For families seeking criminal or civil redress in these matters, it is imperative that the Coroner’s actions and findings are able withstand legal scrutiny and challenge. Having IACME accreditation will go a long way towards helping us serve the public in these matters.”

*If you do not have any living family members, have a neighbor or trusted friend know where your will is, so that when you die it is easily accessible.
*Most funeral homes offer preplanning of burial or cremation.
*You can prepay for services, give them your life insurance information, or begin to make monthly payments so that it is paid for at time of death, once you pay it in full it locks in the price as well.
*You can also sign cremation authorizations, if that is your wish of final disposition, so that your family does not have to do it when you die.
*Once you have made prearrangements, give a copy to or tell a trusted friend or family member so that someone is aware you have preplanned.
*If you have life insurance policies, be sure to have a trusted family member or friend know where they are or keep a copy for themselves (usually the beneficiary is a good person to keep this information).
*Keep beneficiary information up to date, if one of your current beneficiaries die, be sure to elect a new beneficiary for your policy.
*When someone dies, our office has to notify the legal next of kin. A common law spouse is not recognized as a legal next of kin.
*We will then begin looking for any living legal spouse, adult children, parents, siblings, and follow the state recognized hierarchy or kinship until we find a legal next of kin.
*Even if someone is separated from their spouse, no matter how long it has been, they are still considered a next of kin until they are legally divorced by the court system.
*If the only person that you have is your common law spouse we suggest you make prearrangements with your funeral home of choice, and sign all paperwork with them prior to death (especially if you are a cremation), as well as list them in your will to be the one who can make funeral arrangements, this will help because they are then legally able to handle your disposition (The will must be very specific in stating this – please reach out to your attorney for the correct wording).
*South Carolina DHEC Vital Records will issue death certificates. The next of kin will give the funeral home demographic information, it is then electronically sent to the Coroner/Deputy Coroner/Doctor who will sign, then the funeral home will release it. Your family will need to work with the funeral home on the bests way to get the death certificate once it is completed.
*South Carolina law states that if you want to be cremated and have not already signed a preneed cremation authorization prior to death, your cremation must be signed off on by your legal next of kin.
*If you are legally married your spouse will be the one needed to sign off, if your spouse has died, you are divorced, or were never married it goes to the next legal next of kin. Below is the hierarchy of kin that is followed:
-spouse
-surviving adult children
-surviving parents
-adult siblings
-adult grandchildren
-grandparents
-person appointed by probate
*The only time that this list is not followed is if the person has a designated agent in their will to handle their disposition.
*This is also the list that our office follows when handling notifications of a person’s death.
*If there is more than one person in the category that is determined to be the legal next of kin there must be a majority of the group to sign. Ex. There are three children, at least two children must sign off on the cremation.
*Power of Attorney is a great thing to have when someone is living and is unable to make decisions for themselves or would prefer to have someone make decisions for them but once a person dies so does the legality of the Power of Attorney. After death Power of Attorney is no longer valid.
*As Power of Attorney, if the person is still living, you can sign a preneed cremation authorization for that person, so that when they do die that portion is already taken care of. If this is signed prior to death the next of kin will not need to sign the cremation authorization.
*In order to sign a preneed cremation authorization as a Power of Attorney it must be a Durable Power of Attorney, it cannot be a Healthcare Power of Attorney.
*Our office is not able to use Power of Attorney as legal next of kin, unless they are the actual legal next of kin.
*This makes it easy for the investigator to know who to contact if you are found at home by yourself. Try to include an address or phone number
*Put a note in your wallet, on your refrigerator, or another easily accessible place for our investigator to see so they know that you do have arrangements made. At that point they can take the information found to try to make contact with your legal next of kin.
Grief is an important part of life, a way of valuing life itself. For when a loved one dies, a part of our self seems to die, or at least, is shattered. You have lost a person who was part of you, in whom you have vested and bonded.
Our grief acknowledges the deceased person’s importance. It is a way of valuing, cherishing and making sense of that part of our life that we shared with the deceased. To deny grief would be to deny the meaning of other. It would be like saying the past does not matter- a denial of our history. It would also deny future opportunities to discover strengths, meaning and growth.
Grief is painful, often confusing and immobilizing experience. It requires patience, trust, acceptance of self, safety and support. Grief is a highly individual process. There is no right or wrong way to do it and no correct amount of time in which to do it.
MOST PEOPLE WHO SUFFER A LOSS MAY EXPERIENCE ONE OR MORE OF THE FOLLOWING:
• Feel tightness in the throat or heaviness in the chest.
• Have an empty feeling in their stomach, experience a loss or gain of appetite.
• Feel guilty at times and angry at other times.
• Feel restless and look for activity, but find it difficult to concentrate.
• Feel as though the loss is not real, that it did not actually happen.
• Sense the loved one’s presence, find themselves expecting the person to walk in the door at the usual time., hear their voice or see their face.
• Have difficulty sleeping, dream of their loved one frequently or not at all.
• Assume mannerisms or traits of their loved one.
• Experience an intense preoccupation with the life of the deceased.
• Feel guilty or angry over things that happened or did not happen in the relationship with the deceased.
• Feel intense anger at the loved one for leaving them.
• Feel as though they need to care for other people who seem uncomfortable around them by politely not talking about the feelings of loss.
• Need to tell, retell and remember things about the deceased and the experience of death.
• Feel their mood change over the slightest thing.
• Cry at unexpected times
In most cases, the deceased is taken to the morgue maintained by the Office of the Coroner, located at AnMed Health in Anderson, South Carolina. If an autopsy is required, it is performed by a board-certified Forensic Pathologists who is employed by the Anderson County Office of the Coroner. When the investigation completed, the deceased is officially ‘released,’ at which time the funeral home with which the family has made-arrangements is authorized to retrieve the body.
In certain circumstances and at the discretion of the Coroner Investigator, the deceased may be released directly to a funeral home or mortuary of the family’s choice. The Anderson County Office of the Coroner does not recommend specific funeral homes or mortuaries, this decision rest entirely with the family or the legal next-of -kin of the decedent.
State law requires the Office of the Coroner to be notified when a death occurs within their jurisdiction. The Office of the Coroner will perform an investigation and arrive at the cause and manner of death and either complete or arrange the completion of the death certificate.
Occasionally, more investigation is required, in which case a pending classification is used on the death certificate to allow funeral arrangements to be made in a timely manner.
Identity of the deceased is usually determined through methods other than visual identification by family or acquaintances, and a visual ID is not required. Only in very rare cases are such identifications required. Should it become necessary for you to come in or bring other records or x-rays, you will be contacted.
As soon as possible, you should select and communicate with representatives from a funeral home of your choice. These professionals are aware of the difficulties you are experiencing and the stresses that you are under, and will assist you with arrangements. The funeral home should notify the Office of the Coroner and let us know that they are handling your arrangements, and we will work closely with them to assure proper transfer of remains.
Our office does not select funeral homes nor do we make funeral arrangements. In the event someone is making arrangements for the family, the Office of the Coroner must be provided with written authorization to release the deceased, signed by the legal next-of-kin.
The Office of the Coroner strongly discourages viewing prior to the deceased being released to a funeral home. While in the custody of the Office of the Coroner, it is imperative that the proper medicolegal procedures be followed without interruption and to their completion.
Also our present facility/morgue does not facilitate family viewing.
Personal effects that are on the body in a coroner’s case are the jurisdiction of the Office of the Coroner, while other personal effects that may be collected are part of the evidence collection of the involved law enforcement agency (e.g. City Police Department; Sheriff’s Office). All coroner case personal effects are accounted for, and are released to the family as soon as possible; there are specific chain-of-custody procedures for the release of valuables. Occasionally clothing will need to be stored as evidence or disposed of if it presents a biohazard.
Decedent medications are secured and destroyed by the Coroner Investigator. Medications and/or Illicit Drug Paraphernalia can not be returned to family.
Other frequently asked questions should be referred to the proper agencies as follows:
Local Law Enforcement – custody of weapons involved with deaths
South Carolina Funeral Directors Association – regulations governing burials, cremations, and embalming
A death certificate can be obtained through your funeral home or from the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control – Department of Vital Records. The Anderson County Coroners Office does not issue death certificates.
The Coroner and/or Deputy Coroner will decide if an autopsy is necessary, however approximately 85% of deaths we investigate do not require one. We may not perform an autopsy if the cause of death can be determined from other criteria, and is of “natural causes.” If the deceased has been under the care of a physician accessing the medical history, and no suspicion of foul play exists, an autopsy may be waived.
Autopsies are performed when additional investigation is needed to establish the cause and manner of death; autopsies are ALWAYS performed in suspected homicides. A board certified forensic pathologist conducts all autopsies. Each case is unique and handled respectfully on an individual basis. Family consent is not required for an autopsy to be performed; it is the authority of the Coroner Investigator to order an autopsy.
An autopsy is a post-mortem medical procedure that consists of a thorough examination of the body in order to determine and/or assist in determining the cause and manner of a person’s death; it can also provide information on the presence of diseases or injuries that may have been contributing mortality factors.
No. Although incisions are made, they are placed so that they will not be seen; they are also very carefully closed after the procedure just as in surgical procedures. At all times, the decedent is treated with the utmost respect.
Each case is distinct, but under normal circumstances a case not involving autopsy will result in release within 24-48 hours or less. If an autopsy is required, the investigation may take considerably longer, particularly if identification of the individual is an issue.
You may contact the Office of the Coroner at (864) 260-4057 to inquire about the status of your case.
Yes. You can call the Office at (864) 260-4057 to inquire when a report will be ready. Family may also pick up a copy of the report in person at 301 Camson Road, Anderson, SC 29625
If your loved one did not have burial funds, the next-of-kin may ask for assistance in government and private sources. Your funeral home can provide you that information.
The Anderson County Office of the Coroner does not provide financial resources to handle funeral arrangements. The Office of the Coroner does have an Indigent Cremation Process that is utilized when no family exists and financial means are not available. Please contact the Office of the Coroner to inquire about the Indigent Cremation Process.
People who served in the Armed Forces may be entitled to veterans benefits. Seek more information from the Veterans Administration (VA) at www.cem.va.gov. Your funeral home will also have that information.
