Anderson County officials were recently notified of a scam operation wherein a customer of the Planning Department received fraudulent invoices via email with instructions to wire payment to a particular web address.

The scam emails originated from an address with a “@usa.com” domain. Authentic emails from Anderson County will be from an “@andersoncountysc.org” domain. The Planning Department does not ask for wired transfers as payments.

Also, Anderson County does not generally accept wire payments. Wire payments are generally accepted only for large sums of money and are arranged with the involvement of the Anderson County Treasurer’s Office. These wire transactions use two-factor authentication methods to protect the parties involved.

Please be vigilant of this and other scams. If you receive any suspicious emails purporting to be from Anderson County, feel free to call the appropriate county office to verify authenticity.

If you have been victimized by any kind of scam operation, please contact the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office at (864)260-4400.
